Carriage rides, historic homes, southern hospitality, and oak trees draped in curtains of Spanish moss. A Savannah weekend getaway is always a good idea any time of the year.

There’s not many who could say no to a weekend getaway to Savannah, Georgia, and while a few days is certainly not enough time to explore this gorgeous city, it will allow to see some key sites and try some delicious Southern foods.

Not going to lie, I was very impressed by the Peach State, and if I had more time I would definitely spend a week or so exploring the historic city and its surroundings.

Best Month to Take a Quick Trip to Savannah

Weather in Savannah is always on the warmer spectrum year round; however, there are definitely better times to visit for hot days, festivals, and outdoor activities! The off season is known for being between September-December ish, when the weather drops to the 60’s.

As someone who lives New England, I would still very much welcome 60’s over blizzards any day, so if you are from a colder state, keep this in mind! Hotel and flight prices are waaay cheaper in the off-season, so you have more of a chance of getting a bargain here. Spring time (March-May) is unquestionably the best time to visit Savannah.

Unfortunately, hotel prices will sky-rocket, but you’ll be able to enjoy the heat, experience the spring blooms, and stroll through the grassy parks. In the spring, there are also a number of activities and festivals to visit.

Where to Stay for your Savannah Weekend Getaway

One thing that Savannah is certainly not lacking is beautifully decorated and unique places to stay. Depending on what you’re looking for, you can choose to stay in renovated mansions, historic inns, or in my case, a renovated cotton warehouse.

During my trip, I worked with the River Street Inn (all opinions are my own), a beautifully restored, 200-year-old cotton warehouse in the Downtown Historic District. This hotel has it all- views of the Savannah River, the perfect location on River Street, a short walk to the remarkable Forsyth Park, and a superb choice for a Savannah getaway.

In my opinion, the three top areas to stay in Savannah are the Historic District, East Bay & River Street, or City Market. If you’ve never been to Savannah, all three of this locations are within walking distance of many famous sites and places to visit.

What to Do in the Historic District

The Historic District! Think quintessential Southern homes, cobblestone streets, and park squares at every turn. Start the day with rooftop views and an out of this world brunch at the Drayton Hotel.

Then, stroll around the District, and stop at Art’s Cafe where you can dine in a double-decker bus. Next, find your way to Jone’s Street (said to be one of the prettiest streets in the state, with low hanging trees and flower boxes). You can easily get lost as you meander your way past boutiques, cute restaurants, and antique shops.

There are SO many squares located around Savannah, especially in the old town. Turn down any road, and you’re bound to find one. A must visit is the “Forrest Gump Square!” Located in Chippewa Square, on Bull Street and McDonough Street.

Keep venturing through the Historic District, until you reach Forsyth Park! The perfect place to brunch, get a mimosa to go, and enjoy the natural beauty of Savannah! End the evening at one of my favorite rooftops! Both Peregrine and the Drayton Hotel have fantastic views, and even better drinks

What to Do in East Bay and River Street

Begin your day with a cheap breakfast & beignets at Huey’s located in the River Street Inn. If you’re a guest at the inn, it’s ideal to stroll downstairs and enjoy a mimosa with some spectacular views!

If the weather is looking optimistic, why not take a ride along the Savannah River? For a little luxury, opt for a sunset or dinner cruise on board the Georgia Queen (a 1,000 passenger river-boat).

If you’re in the mood for more, River Street is filled with buzzing restaurants, street performers, and unique store-fronts. If it’s a nice day, it’s very easy here to grab a bite to eat (or cocktail), and bask in the Savannah, spring sun. In the evening, make sure to check out some of these lively rooftop bars.

What to Do in the City Market Area

The City Market area is buzzing with an unbeatable atmosphere year round. If you’re staying in this area, be sure to grab a cocktail to-go and enjoy the weather and people watching at Ellis Square.

Calling all history Buffs! This is your spot, and home to the American Prohibition Museum (I’d opt for the Museum + drink package, which is less than $25).

City Market itself is an open-air marketplace, and is a great spot for meandering and enjoying bistros, galleries, and local musical talents! In the evening, grab a glass of vino and sample one of the many quaint dining spots.
